Recycal has developed a strategic partnership with local foundry Castings Tasmania. From humble beginnings in 1833 as Johns Perry Castings, the foundry has maintained a reputation for quality castings through a range of ownerships – 184 years of continuous operation, somewhat of a record in Australian terms. In 2016, when its future was in doubt, local businessman Peter McLinden, and a couple of local investors, acquired the business, retaining some of the ready-made workforce and ensuring the quality castings operation would continue in Launceston.
Recycal working with the newly named, Castings Tasmania, has committed to supply the quality steels needed for the foundry, utilising the latest in portable X Ray guns that can sort metal in various grades to take advantage of the range of alloys, matching the best scrap to the right castings. This sort of alliance will ensure that local scarp arisings, local labour and know how will ensure quality castings continue to be made in Tasmania for the foreseeable future.
The Rowe family originally operated the business known as Southern Rocycling from its inception in 1990 until it was sold in 2007. In 2011 Recycal was formed with encouragement and support from within the industry to re-establish the service that had been provided by the original Southern Rocycling company. The original family members and many of the old Southern staff re-joined, and the business quickly gained traction with the return of old customers, and a steady growth in new business.
The family continue to build on the foundations they set with Southern Rocycling and evolve the new ‘Recycal’ to meet the needs of the market and to service customers with the same care and support that has differentiated the company over its competitors.
The ’customer is first’ culture that existed with Southern Rocycling continues to permeate the Recycal business and is deeply engrained in all those who work for the company. Long term trusted relationships continue and new ones are forged as the company continues to migrate and change in a dynamic environment.
Our most important asset will always be our employees and staff who have a sense of pride in the work they do. More than 50% of our staff has worked for the family since the establishment of Southern Rocycling in 1991, reflecting the positive service culture of a team who enjoy what they do.
Protecting the environment and preserving the world in which we live is a fundamental objective for the Rowe group of recycling companies, including Recycal. Reusing scrap metal and diverting metal rich waste from landfill for reuse helps reduce the need for mining, an unnecessary use of energy and reduces the need for landfill. Recycal is committed to doing its part to ensuring a cleaner, greener, more environmentally friendly future for all.
Recycal is proud of its safety record and tirelessly works to ensure we maintain our zero LTI’s record. Our employees are trained to the highest safety standards and procedures and are equipped with the necessary protective clothing & accessories to ensure their jobs are preformed safely. The group has been following the ISO management system since 2016 and are pleased to have received ISO 9001, 14001 and 18001 accreditation.
Recycal believes in putting back into the community and actively supports more than 10 charities, community groups and sporting clubs around Australia. This commitment is borne out of philanthropic desire to make a difference and helping those less fortunate in the community, who have problems socially or are in need of community support.
Chairman of the Rowe family of recycling companies, Doug Rowe, is an active member of a number of ‘Not for Profit’ boards, including ‘The Pancare Foundation’ and ‘Life Education’. The Rowe family donates almost 10% of their profits to supporting philanthropy and charities around Australia.
